# How to Become an Online Notary in Mississippi

Initially legalized April 7, 2020, the Secretary of State authorized remote notarizations under temporary guidance thanks to Executive Order 1467. Here’s how to become an online notary in Mississippi.

* Be commissioned as a traditional notary public.
* Fill out the [Remote Notary Notification form](https://www.sos.ms.gov/Content/documents/Business/notaries/FillableRemoteNotaryNotificationForm.pdf).
* Send the Remote Notary Notification form to remotenotary@sos.ms.gov.
* Receive acceptance from the Mississippi Secretary of State.

Once you have received your approval from Mississippi you are able to begin performing online notarization under Mississippi guidelines.  You can upload a screenshot of your approval as your RON Approval Document.

### Is Online Notarization Legal in Mississippi?

Absolutely! [House Bill 1156](https://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/documents/2020/pdf/HB/1100-1199/HB1156SG.pdf) established remote online notarization as a legal practice in Mississippi starting July 1, 2021. This legislation empowers notaries public commissioned within the state to notarize electronic documents remotely.

# What are the Requirements for Becoming an Online Notary in Mississippi?

The state of Mississippi offers opportunities for commissioned notaries to become authorized for online notarizations (RON). Here’s an overview of the qualifications and process involved:

* You must already hold a current commission as a [traditional notary public in Mississippi.](https://bluenotary.us/how-to-become-a-notary-public-in-mississippi/)
* As with traditional notary commissions, applicants must be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens or resident aliens, registered voters in their state of application, and proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
* You must possess a high school diploma or equivalent credential.
* No felony convictions are permissible unless pardoned.

* Select a technology provider from the Secretary of State’s list of approved RON service providers. This company will equip you with the software and tools necessary to conduct online notarizations securely.
